Would Jesus cook chicken nuggets?

Being a teen is hard. I remember what it was like. Learning new concepts and ideas at school, while also trying to navigate the social landscape. Will I fit in at my new school? Will people notice this zit on my face? What if I fail my math test? I wanted independence from my parents but I had no idea about managing the realities of life yet. Juggling the responsibilities of a job, school, sports, friends and my family were a challenge for me, like any normal teen.

Now imagine that you are also responsible for another human being! This is exactly what the young people in Youth for Christ’s Parent Life are experiencing. They are teens and they are parents. They are learning how to raise their children (when they themselves are not even fully developed) while they're still growing up. They are faced with countless challenges and limited resources.

“Mom life is great, although it’s still a little rough right now but my mom helps,” Jessica* commented, on how life is going for her. She recently regained custody of her son after six months of him being in state custody. She is working hard to be a good mom and to provide a life for her family but it doesn’t come easily. She will need to overcome many challenges.

Our main goal at YFC Parent Life is to share the love and hope of Jesus with teen parents. We share his love in many different ways. One of those ways is teaching them life skills. We have been talking about setting and achieving goals and recently Jessica shared that she needs to learn how to cook for her son.

In response, two of our awesome volunteers organized a cooking class at one of their homes. The girls used their new cooking skills to make healthy, homemade chicken nuggets, roasted vegetables and cookies that need only a few ingredients! They were able to take their food home along with new kitchen tools to keep the cooking going at home!

In the Bible God is often compared to a parent. In Deuteronomy God is likened to a mother eagle, hovering over her chicks. God is a nurturer, hovering over us with love and affection and providing for us.

Like an eagle that rouses her chicks
and hovers over her young,
so he spread his wings to take them up
and carried them safely on his pinions.
Deuteronomy 32:11

I thank God for the privilege of coming alongside these young woman, who desperately want to be good mothers. As much as we are able to show them the image and character of Jesus, we will. Whether we are cooking chicken nuggets or sharing the Gospel story, we aim to be the hands and feet of Jesus, and in turn empower teen moms to do likewise for their children.
